TOPIC DISCUSSION 2 -Stereotype by chuah sze nee

A stereotype is the application of one [usually negative] to a whole group. They can be applied to the  whole social, this is what I learned from lecture class.

From what I seen on the video, stereotyping not only applied to arabs, but also to the east asians as well. We can see that from stereotypes of east asians in the western world. From my research, during the middle 1800s, the westerns have this stereotypes on asian men that they can only do what consider as "women's work". This is because that the laborers have a look of long braids and wore long silk gowns. They are also seen as a threat to the economy in the west, so they are barred from "male's work".

Another stereotype on asian men is that they are threats to the western woman. Japanese men at the days back then are showed as security danger to country, and therefore sexual danger to western woman.

Now, on the 20th century, what I have seen on magazines are the stereotype on women. Unrealistic, unhealthy portrayals of female sexuality, sexual health, and gratuitous female sexuality and nudity -says http://www.mediaandwomen.org/problem.html
Female sexuality is now everywhere on media, you can see it on tv, magazines and etc. Too often the exposure of these images influence the teens to have sex earlier. One of them is the music video, when women are in the background, approximately half the time they are dressed in ways that expose or focus on their breasts and rear ends (ChildrenNow, Boys to Men: Media Messages About Masculinity, 1999).

Last but not least, we often see women have unhealthy body image. They are mostly fashion models, pop stars and actresses. They actually underweight and have their natural weight off by diet.
( A girl or woman who diets and is underweight can be undernourished, sometimes even losing her menstrual period. Prolonged loss of periods can lead to fertility problems---while constant or extreme dieting also carries health risks and can actually lead to longterm weight gain. by Body Wars, by Margo Maine, 2000)

  1. from your blog, i saw that you said most of the stereotypes are negative, i do have to differ with you here. Some of the stereotype can be positive as well, such as nurses are gentle or Asian mathematics are good, to me, these are a complement to us which we have to be proud of as most the primary student had work hard on it.

  2. Your post about those skinny models triggers a thought of mine. I have came across some articles, people usually have a firm perception about fat people. Here is an interesting research: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/04/100420152839.htm
In the research, they have this finding, "when a thin person is seen lying down watching television, people assume they're resting. But when people see an overweight person relaxing, it's automatically assumed they're lazy and unmotivated." How stereotyping it is!

Most people typically think that fat people are poor employee, lazy, and stupid. Well, I think the attitude of a person doesn't depends on the person's body size. I know some fat people who are very hard working, intelligence, and cheering. Some of them hold high position in their company.
