TOPIC DISCUSSION 3 - Are bloggers journalist? by chuah sze nee

Are bloggers journalist? This is a very interesting issue to think or look into. Lets see what is a blogger and a journalist. A journalist collects and disseminates information about current events, people, trends, and issues. His or her work is acknowledged as journalism while bloggers keep and writes blogs, according to wikipedia.com.

For me, in few years back ,blogs are more to private life. People writes what they feel, what they do and where they go into a blog, friends and family leave comments to encourage them. Blogs are made to connect friends and family together. But, now on the other hand, with more blogging applications popping up, many people have turn their blogs into journals. They are now part bloggers and part journalists.

An example is the blog I found , can be treated as a journal is the blog with this url, http://mylovelybluesky.com/. The owner of this blog actually writes and promote the food around local. As we know, journalists writes information or reviews about something. Well, we would know where to look for nice and good food after reading her blog. Of course, she did put her private life there also.

When the blogs come, there is good side and there is the bad side. With easy access of blogging and journal applications, people can talk freely about anything and anyone in this era without thinking the consequences, the freedom of speech. Defamation have been widely seen in some blog owners, that there is guy who defamed the Sultan of Johor in his blog after his death around last year.
Conclusion is that bloggers can be journalists. Although there is freedom of speech, but we also need to bare in mind that the speech limit is there. We would certainly did not want to play with lawsuit.

  2. Actually I don't quite agree with you. To what I believe, journalist can be bloggers and write essays on the blog. But if bloggers be journalist, many things might go wrong.

Yes, journalist collects and disseminates information about current events, people, trends, and issues; this is the same as some bloggers. But journalist is a profession, they undergo specialize educational training. With these educations, besides they have better grammars and writing skills, they will know what to speak and what to avoid. If someone crosses a certain limit, they might cause the misunderstanding between countries and probably start a war.

  3. I agree with you for the blog part where defamation occurs a lot in this era. The people can write anything in their blog but they have to not go against the law to not get any trouble. Some of the people write about something not after double confirming will create misunderstanding.
