Week6- stereotype- 1092701286

Stereotype had been in our life for as long as we can remember without realizing it. Our mind had automatically interpret what we see and assuming everything of that kind is the same. The main reason behind this is because, we had been feeding with the same information repeatedly through all form of medias. As time passes, more and more people from advertising and broadcasting field have been using this method to brain wash consumer's mindset. "People tended to follow what they see rather than what they hear." Quoted a Harvard University lecturer.

From the given video, we learn that we will copy what others is doing if it is advertised to us in a very persuasive and believable manner through media. For an example, the American had successfully made the world believe and stereotype Iraq people or people from the Arabic country with Thobe clothing, Islamic background or even with bushy mustache are simply terrorist, through the incident that bring grave and sorrow to the citizen of America and terror to other part of the world, 911. American had fully monopolize and utilize the power of media to the extend that we only see perspective from the American but not the real facts from Iraq. To be honest, i too have the stereotype to Arabic people before i came to know them in person when i enter University.

To bring the current news closer, what is hot on Facebook and Youtube is the 709 Bersih 2.0 campaign. This issue had reviewed a lot of unshared stereotype view of races in Malaysia in a very typical mindset. Some Malays still think that Chinese and Indians are outsiders even though all races had been fighting side by side with each other for the past 50 years. Or even, we never though that from the past, some Malays had been fighting for the rights of all of the races and eliminating old fashion teaching of their own culture in order to suit the changes of current trend flow. However, through the Bersih 2.0, we saw all races fight together as one for the right of the nation to have a clean election in future.

As a wrap up, we should judge a person or a culture through every aspect before determining who and what the person's personality is. Stereotype should be avoid in order to have a better understanding of everything.

  1. I agree with you Melissa, as you said, we should judge a person or a culture through every aspect before determining the person personality but not judging through the out look.
And through the Bersih 2.0 campaign also, without touching any sensitive issue with the government, me too agree that all the races have had united as they are helping each other by not judging them based on their races.
Therefore, we should have ignore the negative stereotype on the people to avoid any misunderstanding.

  2. It's undeniable that Arab people give us an impression that they are terrible and lazy, although some of them are nice. That's a fact that most of the Arab people are rich and starting to become lazy and egoist. They are lazy and don't like to listen to others. Not just what I had seen in MMU, my cousin in Singapore also said so as he also seen the same situation as I did. So it's normal that these kinf of stereotype keep in our mind.
